Buyers Seek the Rare & Unusual ~ Fancy Color Diamonds

January 13, 2017

Unique diamonds, unheated  colored gemstones, period jewelry and rare watches were among the top sellers for Joseph DuMouchelle Fine Jewelry Auctioneers in 2016.  The champion was an exceptional art deco platinum and 13.88ct marquise shape, fancy vivid yellow diamond ring accented by calibre cut emeralds set in gold, with a presale auction estimate of $300,000/500,000 and ultimately fetched $1,062,500 (including buyer’s premium).  The diamond was an attractive older style marquise cut with GIA calling the stone“vivid yellow” color and VVS2  in clarity;

Another unique and one-of-a kind items included an antique twin ring set with a 2.80ct GIA fancy gray old European cut diamond set in platinum and a 2.46ct GIA fancy yellow diamond set in yellow gold with a presale estimate of $30,000/40,000 and hammering down at $81,250 (including buyer’s premium).  This final auction result  is an indicator that buyers are currently seeking a combination  of the rare and unusual which cannot be easily found by the online mass sellers.
